James Barlow

James Barlow

James “Big Jim” Barlow is a veteran laborer and one of Walter “Hammer” Cole’s closest and most trusted companions. Small, wiry and sharp-minded, he has spent decades working with his hands and solving problems through experience rather than theory. In Hammertown, Jim serves as both Hammer’s right-hand man and one of the community’s most dependable practical voices.

“Funny thing about working men. Push ’em long enough and sooner or later they push back.”

Big Jim earned his place beside Hammer long before Hammertown became a political cause. A seasoned worker with decades of practical experience, he developed a reputation for noticing problems others missed and finding simple solutions when plans began to fall apart. His dry humor, skepticism and instinct for reading people made him a useful counterweight to Hammer’s more forceful personality.

During the uprising at Northern Settlement, Jim remained one of Hammer’s closest supporters and helped keep the workers organized as the dispute escalated into open rebellion. After the fighting ended, his role did not disappear with the crisis. He stayed at Hammer’s side during the reconstruction of Hammertown, helping coordinate work, advise on practical matters and deal with the countless small problems involved in turning a captured settlement into a functioning community.
